Dental implants not only represent one of the most popular dental treatments but are also among the most versatile treatments available at dental offices, such as Drs. Goodman, Ko, and Associates. Our practice in Milford, Massachusetts, is committed to staying ahead of the latest and greatest treatments that modern dentistry has to offer, and it shows in our investments in the training and technologies to consistently bolster our in-house capabilities. A single implant may be used to support one prosthetic tooth or crown as a form of tooth replacement. Or, minimal strategically placed implants may retain implant-supported dentures or bridges. It is our great privilege to provide insight into the steps toward a better, healthier smile with implants as an alternative to conventional dentures.
During an evaluation, one of our dentists will take a peek inside of your mouth. We will assess the health of any remaining teeth to determine your needs. Be prepared to talk about your preferences for tooth replacement. If you have existing dentures and are unhappy about them, we will take a look at your appliance and determine if adjustments can help or if a completely new denture may be most appropriate.
Today’s dentures are not your parents’ or grandparents’ dentures! Materials and techniques to replicate tooth and gum structures have evolved. However, implant-supported dentures may be appropriate to address concerns over fit. Implants stabilize the upper and lower dentures in the jawbone. The implant functions like a natural tooth root. Conventional dentures have generally been held in place by natural suction and the help of products like denture adhesive. The problem is these dentures do not continue to fit like the day they were placed. Over time, the bony tissue in the jaw retreats. When the shape of the jaw changes, the denture no longer conforms well to the surrounding tissues. It can become loose and no longer functions well, nor does it feel comfortable. These challenges are generally avoided with implant-retained dentures. Due to their unique design, these dentures support the strength and health of the bone in the jaw and continue to fit as well as the day you got them!
At our office, considerable expertise meets extensive diagnostics. We use these advanced diagnostics to aid in preparing for the precise placement of your implants as well as the design of your denture appliance. Notably, each implant must be positioned precisely in the jawbone to support successful healing and the long-term success of your implant-supported dentures.
There are nuances from patient to patient in what to expect from the process. These are based on factors such as your specific needs and preferences. In general, implants are a two-phase process. The first stage involves surgically placing the required number of implants to hold your denture in place. These implants will ultimately integrate into or heal with the surrounding, supportive bone in the jaw.
Once the implants have healed, they can provide a solid foundation for your denture. The denture is attached to the implants by way of special clasps or other attachments. We may be able to provide you with a provisional denture to wear while your implants are healing. Additionally, for those with remaining teeth that need to be removed, extractions may be performed during the same visit as your implant procedure. We won’t know for sure what approach is most appropriate for you until after an evaluation at our office in Milton, MA. Rest assured that regardless of your preferred method of tooth replacement, you will be satisfied with the potentially transformative result. Call Drs. Goodman, Ko, and Associates at (508) 850-0686 to find out more and to book your consultation today.
