Gum recession is a common dental issue affecting people of all ages. If left untreated, receding gums can lead to further complications, including tooth sensitivity, infections, and loss. At David A. Goodman, DMD, Alan C. Ko, DMD, in Milford, Massachusetts, we specialize in diagnosing and treating receding gums, helping patients restore their oral health and confidence.
One of the first signs of gum recession is increased sensitivity to hot or cold foods and drinks. When the gums recede, they expose the roots of your teeth, which lack enamel protection. This can lead to discomfort or pain when consuming certain foods. If you’re experiencing this sensitivity, it may be a sign that your gums are receding, and you should consult a dental professional for treatment options.
Have you noticed that your teeth appear longer or more exposed than before? This is one of the most visible signs of receding gums. As the gums pull back from the teeth, more of the tooth’s surface becomes visible, giving the impression that the teeth are longer. If you notice this change, seeking treatment before the problem worsens is essential, as this can lead to further gum recession and even tooth loss in severe cases.
Bleeding gums are another red flag indicating that your gums may be receding. Healthy gums should not bleed when brushing or flossing, so if you notice blood after brushing, it could be a sign of gum disease or gum recession. This could also be accompanied by swelling or tenderness. If left untreated, bleeding gums can progress into more serious conditions like periodontal disease—a dental examination by Drs. Goodman or Ko will help determine the cause and recommend an appropriate treatment plan.
As our gums recede, supporting tissue weakens, causing teeth to shift or feel loose. This is especially common in advanced cases. If you notice shifting teeth, seek immediate treatment. Early intervention can prevent further issues.
If your gumline has receded, schedule a visit to David A. Goodman, DMD, Alan C. Ko, DMD, in Milford, MA. Gums pulling away from teeth create gaps that allow bacteria buildup. This affects appearance and can lead to infections. Our dental professionals can assess your condition and recommend treatment.
