TMJ disorder can make daily activities uncomfortable and challenging. It can cause headaches and chronic jaw pain in some people, and chewing food can be harder. These issues can take a huge toll on physical and emotional well-being. Fortunately, Dr. Alan Ko and his team in Milford, Massachusetts, offer an innovative therapy called neuromuscular dentistry. With this TMJ disorder treatment, many individuals can find relief and get back to enjoying their lives again.
TMJ disorder—or TMD—affects the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), the small hinge on both sides of your jaw. The TMJ is the joint that connects your skull to your jaw. These hinges help you chew your food and yawn, and they’re also used for speaking. When it doesn’t function correctly, the TMJ can cause pain and tension in the jaw, face, shoulder area, or neck. In some cases, movement may become limited.
Symptoms of TMJ vary widely, but these are the most common:
TMJ disorder can be caused by a few different things, including bruxism (teeth grinding) or jaw clenching. Both of these can occur at night when you’re asleep or subconsciously during the day. Trauma to the jaw or face can also cause TMJ, as can arthritis and other joint conditions.
Neuromuscular dentistry focuses on the relationship between your teeth, the joints in your jaw, and your muscles. While traditional dentistry deals with just your teeth and bite, neuromuscular dentistry considers how these elements work together.
This type of treatment can include splint therapy or custom-made nightguards. We may also address any bite problems you have. Neuromuscular dentistry treatments gently reposition your jaw and/or prevent grinding and clenching.
Your first visit with us starts with a detailed evaluation of your jaw function, the alignment of your bite, and your muscle activity. Dr. Ko uses advanced technology to measure how your jaw moves and how your muscles behave both when they’re in use and when they’re resting. Once we have a diagnosis, he’ll create a personalized treatment plan that can include any of the options you need to find relief.
Many patients see relief within a few weeks of starting their treatment. The key is to follow our dental experts’ recommendations closely. The timelines of your progress can vary depending on the severity of your condition.
